ASUS ML228H 22Inch UltraSlim Widescreen LED Monitor Reviews and Price:

4.0 out of five stars Excellent Monitor, December 25, 2010
By R. King (Oregon USA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () This review is from: ASUS ML228H 22 Inch Ultra Slim Widescreen LED Monitor (Personal Computers) I was in the market for a new lcd/led monitor that could replace an maturing 19″ samsung crt monitor that has seen it is best days yrs ago. There are sooo many monitors to review that it will bruise your brain but ‘s web site makes that as easy/simple and useful.
I finally selected this monitor for it is specifications, features, design and Amazon’s great price(under $150)design. It was a risk as I was not familiar with the brand but after much research at various websites about dependability, buyer satisfaction, company strength in the business, etc.
It’s beautifully sculpted/designed. Weighs only about eight lbs. The connection to the base enables you to change the monitor to your best looking at angle from 6 to 20 degrees also as swivel left or right. Instruction manual was basic using usually picturegraphs to assemble the base to the monitor, operation buttons (heat sensor touch), web site access for membership, product reg and warranty. Assembly was simple and only obliged a coin to tighten two screws in place. It comes with the power cable/small transformer, vga and hdmi connects. Monitor screen is matte (great for near windows)and looking at real estate is big in comparison to my old 19″ CRT!

I connected to my four yr old desktop with supplied vga cable and works beautifully right out of the carton! I am still playing around with the resolution settings and modification buttons, menus, etc. But I checked it out looking at internet, netflix, etc. I will add many more to this review once I have had many burn time on it.

3 weeks now since I have had this monitor.
Adjustments for best looking at are easy with thermal buttons once you get the hang of it.
It’s a great monitor and it is performance is respectable of mentioning.

BUT

I had first given this monitor “5 stars” but have now downgraded it to “4 stars” because of a visual nuisance I have noted on the screen that has not resolved. I have noted a “dirty translucent smudge” type spot about the size of a thumbprint on the screen. At 1st I thought it could clean off but it has not with anything I have used. I do not think it is a pixel problem as pictures show through the spot. When you look carefully at the spot at different angles it nearly disappears and still it is there. Maybe it is inbetween the matrix and the screen? It is most noticable looking at a light or white background as it is not noticable unless it is a light or white background.

I’m not sure that I can take looking at that spot for the next some number of years so I am going to be contacting about possibly exchanging it for another one inside the return timeframe. Stay tuned.
I contacted buyer service using Amazon’s chat. The “uncleanable smudge” could be considered a defect and I has been offered a choice to return the monitor for a refund or I may have it replaced. I like the monitor just good so I chose to have it replaced with another one. I has been issued a return shipping label with information via email. I thought that this resolved the issue, but when I printed out the return label/info; I has been surprised that it said that I requested a refund under “action requested” though Return Details stated I wanted a substitute. I initiated another buyer service chat and got a different person and had to start again, but it got rather complicated as it appears the monitor is sold from an outside source (I bought it direct from Amazon)which adds shipping charges and the price went up $25 since I bought it. So the only solution offered to get a substitute monitor was to order another one from the outside source, creating some number of new transactions on the creditcard, etc. Lots more chances to get it more messed up. So I decided that it could be best to cancel all actions, refunds, replacements, etc. And just keep the monitor I have. Buyer service was apologetic for causing any bother to me and credited $20 to my account for accepting the monitor with the defect.
I think that after all was said and done keeping the present monitor was best for me. It is not a working problem and is only a nuisance when looking at light backgrounds. It is still an excellent monitor and performs beautifully. Still a hard four stars!

5.0 out of five stars great for the price, January 20, 2011
By Zephyr618 See all my reviews () This review is from: ASUS ML228H 22 Inch Ultra Slim Widescreen LED Monitor (Personal Computers) I bought this to make good use of my graphics cards. The dirt cheap price and remarkable specifications list left me a little suspicious, but I went ahead and bought it anyway presuming I could just return it if things went bad. I will not be returning it.

The screen is totally gorgeous and it takes less than a minute to learn how to navigate the menus. I am a little mad that the price has been lowered now after I bought it but I do not care because it was still a great deal at my price. It is paper thin, bright, has nice contrast, is energy economical, has very low lag (2ms!), and is set up easily. For this price, you can not get anything better (or anything close!). The power button is awesome. It is not a button at all. It is just a touch sensitive part of the monitor. Just turning the thing on is a nice experience.

Pros:
Full HD with bright screen and high contrast
Touch sensitive buttons with easy and useful menu
Very thin
Surprisingly energy efficient
Priced WAY below comparable competition (this is what makes it so great really)

Cons:
Only comes with VGA cables and an HDMI to DVI cable. That was good for me since my 9800 GTX’s use DVI but this really should come bundled with a regular HDMI cable considering it only has a VGA and HDMI port (It has no DVI port, still it comes with a cable for DVI and not HDMI. I think that is pretty dumb). This is the ONLY problem I have
Um. The back of it’s white and I did not realize that. I guess that is a con, but it does not annoy me.

There are only two POSSIBLE enhancements that this monitor could use. By possible I literally mean there aren’t other ways in which high end monitors compete with this one. These are: a higher refresh rate (frame rate) and higher max resolution. 60Hz and 1080p is beyond enough for majority of people and a monitor with higher specifications in those groups and equal specifications in every other way could cost around $400, and the only people who could ever use a higher refresh rate or resolution are hardcore gamers and tech fans because video games are the only thing that exist above 1080p and 60 frames per second. Most HD videos never come close to that framerate still alone any higher. This monitor literally has everything person could need and it is so wonderfully cheap. Not purchasing this could be a mistake.

4.0 out of five stars Works well, looks great., January 6, 2011
By BTJ See all my reviews () This review is from: ASUS ML228H 22 Inch Ultra Slim Widescreen LED Monitor (Personal Computers) This is a good monitor, it has a sleek design with a glossy black finish which i love. It has a great resolution, it’s quite bright but this may be fixed with the touch panel by the power button.
The touch panel is really sensitive on occasion without touching it’ll react and turn the menu on, for me this isn’t a con since i do not use the touch panel much.

The one con it does have is it doesn’t have a DVI connector.(Bought it knowing this)

Now i bought this due to HDMI but the default resolution for the HDMI 1080P is in widescreen which decreases the size of the desktop image by about .25″ from all four sides. To fix this u have to set the resolution to a 16:10, 1680×1050.

Otherwise this is a great looking and working monitor.

ASUS VH236H 23 Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Black Reviews and Price:

5.0 out of five stars Great product for the price, July 26, 2009
By J. Lam (Los Angeles, CA) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () This review is from: ASUS VH236H 23 Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Black (Electronics) .

One of my requirements is to have fitted speakers. I do not have external speakers nor do I like more tangled wires. The speakers sound better than my old Viewsonic VA1912wb I replaced. That’s a welcoming fact. Firstly, there was many of waviness on screen. The troubleshooting guide suggested video connection as the issue. Turns out that it was my old VGA cable (I did not want to craw behind the computer firstly.). Once I hooked up with the new cable provided, it started working perfectly. I am running Windows XP Media Center. After I turned off and on my computer, it recognized the new monitor and reset the resolution and refresh rate profile. It now runs at 1920 x 1080 at 60Hz. No driver is obliged. I was scared that I could have to update my video driver since I have a four yr+ old computer but I do not. With HDMI, DVI, and SPDIF Audio Output, it’ll be more than able to manage my future computer (definitely not with Vista, though).

Of course, not everything is perfect with this monitor. The buttons and OSD menu aren’t great. But they’re inside my expectation depending on other reviews I mentioned before. Also, once you move away from the center view by, more than 45 degrees, the picture quality starts degrading quickly. It means that if you want to show someone standing behind you the pictures on your screen, he/she could have to bend down, sit down, or step back to appreciate what you’re trying to show. They are just minor faults that I am wanting to live with for what I am wanting to pay. In general, I am a happy buyer.

August 11, 2009 Update:

Shortly after I wrote the initial impression above, I started to experience many flickering with the screen. This is my description to ASUS buyer Service:

“While in use, sometimes monitor could flicker. Anywhere from showing multi color vertical bands (partial or full screen) to black or white screen. On occasion it is vertical and horizontal lines covering the full screen (forming concentrated grid pattern). This is a brand new monitor (in use for one week). I am using VGA cable. I have unplugged and plugged the cable and made sure connection is good. I have updated my video card driver to the new variant but didn’t crack the problem. Saw this posted in forum but no solution replied. If not resolved, may have to return the monitor.”

ASUS replied in about two days making some number of suggestions. I followed the advice the best I could. See my successive answer of findings:

“Firstly, could you tell us when and after what action this problem occurred?
1. When the computer 1st boot up. Does not matter if the monitor is on 1st or on after boot up. The screen flickers with vertical multi color bands on the right or on occasion the whole screen. At times there are both vertical and horiztonal bands that form white fabric like pattern. Length could last for two sec to good five seconds.
2. When in use throughout any computer session. Occasional. On occasion happens while surfing the net. Not generally repeatable. In one specific session, every time I went to dpreview.Com, it flickered. But it did not happen again since.

Secondly, press Splendid key on LCD about three seconds to load the default settings.
Did it and no change.

Please replace another graphic card.
Not possible but I have another laptop to test with. This laptop is much newer. One yr old. When switch to ASUS as external monitor, the same flickering happened, for long or short length. But other than that, I didn’t experience other cases.

Thirdly, check if there’s any updated BIOS or driver for your other PC parts.
Updated BIOS.

Now the only times that it flickers are when the computer 1st boots up or when it goes in and out of screen saver or when the monitor is 1st turned on. I have not observed other in session interruptions as before.

Otherwise change this LCD to another PC to test.”

Today, ASUS told me that this can be faulty. I have proceeded to replace my unit via Amazon. Will update again at some point. Up to this point, ASUS buyer service was prompt.

August 15, 2009:

Requested for a substitute on Aug 11. Received a new unit two days afterward. Plugged it in. Not a single problem has been observed. All flickering was gone since. I have to commend the excellent buyer services from both ASUS and Amazon. Could not be happier.

4.0 out of five stars nice value, August 13, 2009
By EDW (NJ, USA) See all my reviews () This review is from: ASUS VH236H 23 Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Black (Electronics) PROS:
Every video connector you could possibly want
23″
Bright
Audio is adequate for a monitor
Dedicated input choose button
No evident dead pixels (knock wood)
Cables included: DSUB, DVI, male/male audio, AC power

CONS:
Restricted vertical looking at angle!
Cumbersome menu / buttons
Greatly polished bezel & base scratch easily
Volume control buried in the menus
No LED backlighting (though not advertised as such)

OTHER:
This is many of monitor for the money! Blows everything in its price range away. If you need a general function monitor NOW and can get it cheap (rebate, free shipping, no tax) I recommend it. Though if you may be able to wait, do as LED backlighting is coming which will give you a possibly more economical, dependable, inexpensive, lighter, and thinner monitor with considerably better color. I scratched the base before I could turn it on for the 1st time, not a big fan of the greatly polished plastic motif. Volume is adequate if you turn it way up (85 or more). Biggest con is the vertical looking at angle no matter how I tilt it I can not get rid of the “dark sky” effect. It is nearly as if there’s no backlighting at the top, only at the bottom. This is common with most modern LCD monitors though. Base isn’t especially flimsy, no vertical modification, tilt range is good. I am also not a big fan of the current widescreen fad, and think a square monitor could be ideal. Have seen 1920 x 1200 in stores and favor that 16:10 part percentage to this 16:9, but they are still rather costly. Note: this is a plug n play monitor and does not require a driver in XP! as well, the box it comes in should easily survive pretty rough shipping as it’s tough with lots of bubble inside. Double boxed mine which made me feel better about it is journey home.

3.0 out of five stars Poor looking at Angle, June 11, 2010
By Leo “Katphish” (Norwich, NY, United States) See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME) This review is from: ASUS VH236H 23 Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Black (Electronics) I bought this monitor upgrading from an old CRT (18 inch Trinitron from Dell). Because I goed from CRT to LCD and from 4:3 to 16:9, there were many of new variables to think about to ensure I got a monitor that pleased me. I studied the specifications on some monitors in the $200 range, considering models from $180 up to about $250 and more. I got this model because it looked like a steal. The specifications were all there: two ms answer time, 23 inches of screen real estate, full HD, high contrast ration, you name it. It also got decent reviews online.

The trouble is that whenever you purchase an item like this completely online, you’re purchasing depending on numbers, word of mouth, and other finally unreliable resources of info. You may want to know upfront that manufacturers use different ways of computing these metrics. As an example, you can not compare contrast rations between manufacturers reliably. Such a comparison may be an indication of a real difference in quality, or it may be meaningless. It is impossible to know. In fact, you can not compare contrast ratios between models made by the SAME maker from different years! if it is the same MODEL! This leaves us buyers in a real pinch. Particularly when purchasing ONLINE.

When I got my monitor, I was firstly impressed with the size of the screen. The 16:9 format is really so much better. It is great for movies and it is better for the extra desktop space. Teamed with Windows 7′s nifty windows that snap to the sides of the screen, comparing two browsers or papers is really nice. The vertical height of this screen is about the same as a 19 inch 4:3 monitor. I have to I somehow thought this could be bigger, but it looks bigger than it’s caused by the extra horizontal space. Running in full 1080p is nice, too. The resolution is crisp and beautiful. Colors are pretty good and in general picture quality is good, though not stellar. After testing the monitor on monitor testing sites, I am not completely sure how most of a difference the advertised 2ms answer time makes. This is another instance where that number may or may not mean much, and testing the monitor is hard without something to compare it to.

But all this is knit picking. I could be more than happy with this buy except for one feature that just leaves me anxious over if or not I should return it and attempt a different model out: looking at ANGLE. This model has a poor looking at angle. Granted, I’m coming from a CRT where looking at angle wasn’t really an issue. But looking at the monitor from just a somewhat up or down angle makes a big difference in contrast, and the horizontal angle looks equally poor. It is not atrociously poor, but poor enough to make me wonder if or not I can live with it. It’s certainly NOT satisfactory considering the ADVERTISED looking at angle is 160 degrees v/h (who knows how they came up with that number, but I think about it false advertising). I should also talk about that I’m writing this review from work on a Samsung SyncMaster 943ewx, and this monitor has a great looking at angle, nearly as good as a CRT, so I do have many kind of point of reference. The looking at angle is worse than any of the three laptops in my home, one of which is around eight years old! To compound this disadvantage, the monitor stand doesn’t let for up and down motion. To change it to eye level you’ll have to put it on a phone book or something. Unfortunate that one big kink should stand in my way of feeling like I made a smart purchase.

I greatly recommend you go into a store and look at monitors up close before purchasing. If you can not do this, then purchase two or more models, attempt them out side by side, keep the one you like the most and return the others. You’ll be out the return shipping, sure, but it beats having to purchase one monitor individually and wonder if or not it is a good purchase and possibly having to pay for return shipping anyway if you are unhappy. At least this way you know you have the monitor you want. As well, this is the only real way to compare monitors, because the controlled conditions of a store do not really let you to test and compare monitors, nor use up any concurrent with them doing your daily tasks.

Overall, this is a good value model, particularly for this screen size, but it does sacrifice in at least one important area.

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME) () This review is from: ASUS VH192D 19 Inch LCD Monitor Black (Personal Computers) I love watching my DVDs on my desktop and this fits the bill. The size is perfect for my narrow computer table. I like the fact that it may change the display settings from Night mode, to Game mode by pressing a single button. It’s good for reading word papers for work also.
